John R.G. Turner gives a spirited introduction here
(http://populationgeneticsgroup.org.uk/) to the history of the early Pop
Group (Population Genetics Group), an anarchic group who would meet in
UK and eventually attract a large crowd of international followers from
Europe, Asia, and America. As it was started in the 1960s by ecological
geneticists, particularly those working on /Cepaea/ snails such as Bryan
Clarke and Arthur Cain, it attracted the attention of people working on
non-model organisms, but included luminaries such as Walter Bodmer,
Michael Bulmer, Steve Jones, John Maynard Smith, Mark Williamson, and
John Turner.
