Message-ID: ***PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT ME ABOUT THIS, CONTACTS IN THE EMAIL BELOW**** Internship to study butterfly speciation in the tropics June 4, 2014 We are seeking a research intern to work on a project at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama from November 2014 for a period of at least one year. The project will focus on speciation in Heliconius butterflies (for more information please see http://heliconius.zoo.cam.ac.uk/). The intern will join a vibrant community of scientists studying the origins and maintenance of tropical diversity (see http://www.stri.si.edu). In particular, the successful candidate will work closely with members of the McMillan (STRI) and Jiggins groups (Cambridge, UK). The project is based in Gamboa and the intern will be responsible for managing a project investigating the genetic basis of host use shifts between two sympatric Heliconius species. The project involves breeding butterflies, managing crossing experiments and conducting behavioural assays. Applicants must be able to work independently and be committed to spending considerable time in Panama. Knowledge of Spanish would be useful but is not essential. A stipend of US$800/month will be provided to cover accommodation and living costs in Panama.
