The 6th International Conference on the Biology of Butterflies will be held at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada from June 29 through July 2, 2010. This meeting has been held at irregular intervals since 1981 and recognizes the role that the study of butterflies has played in our understanding of both evolutionary biology and ecology. The meeting will include Symposia, Contributed Papers, Posters, Banquet and Field Trips. For those wishing attend this meeting, and anyone wishing to present a Contributed Paper or a Poster, please view the Conference webpage at: http://www.biology.ualberta.ca/biobutterfly2010 Deadline for lower-cost Registration: March 31, 2010 Deadline for Abstract submission: May 17, 2010 ------------------------------------ Blanca Huertas FLS DIC MSc Curator (Lepidoptera) Entomology Department The Natural History Museum Cromwell Road SW7 5BD, London, UK. Since its launch at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, the programme has already committed over ?70 million to more than 650 biodiversity projects in nearly 150 countries. Defra is now inviting applications from UK institutions and organisations for Scoping and Fellowship funding and for the new Overseas Territories Challenge Fund. The guidance notes for applicants and application forms are available on the Darwin website at http://darwin.defra.gov.uk . If you have difficulty accessing the information and forms please contact LTS International. The documents are also available in large print on request. The closing date for all applications is Friday 19 February 2010. Defra expects to announce the successful applicants towards the end of April 2010. Further information on the Darwin Initiative, including lists of projects funded in previous rounds, and copies of project documents can also be found on our website. This is in contrast to the role non-vertebrates play in the functioning of our ecosystems, providing the foundations for the existence of more charismatic megafauna and humans. The importance of non-vertebrate biodiversity and a first preliminary overview of the conservation status of selected non-vertebrate taxa will be given. Promoting fungi, invertebrate, plant and ecosystem conservation without the need to focus on charismatic megafauna requires us to build more capacity in the field and raise the profile of non-vertebrate biodiversity. This symposium has been organised by Jonathan Baillie (ZSL), Michael Samways (Stellenbosch University), Monika B?hm (ZSL) and Ben Collen (ZSL). Full information including a programme for this 2-day event is available here: http://www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo/whats-on/symposium-foundations-of-biodiversity,359,EV.html http://www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo/whats-on/ Call for Posters The organisers invite interested parties to submit abstracts for posters with research relating to the symposium topic. Abstracts of no more than 250 words can be emailed or posted (please see www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo/whats-on/symposium-foundations-of-biodiversity,359,EV.html for the form as a word document) to Joy Hayward (details below) by 28 January 2010 for consideration by the coordinators. Accepted poster presenters will be notified by 1 February 2010. All tickets for attendance must be purchased in advance; please complete and return all registration forms to Joy Hayward (details below) along with payment. Please help spread the word: circulate information on this event to your colleagues, contacts, lab members and anyone you think might be interested. Hope this is of interest to you and please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any queries on any of ZSL's Science and Conservation events.
