Vacancy for Technician, BBSRC CryoArks

Salary: £29,678 per annum plus benefits
Location: London

The Natural History Museum (NHM) is about to begin an exciting new collaboration called 'CryoArks'. With funding from the BBSRC, this 3-year project will bring together many diverse and disconnected collections of animal material found in museums, zoos, research institutes and universities in the UK, and will embark on a new sampling initiative to increase the diversity of samples available for research.

The project at NHM will be based within our molecular collections facility (MCF), a specialist storage laboratory which complements our more traditional collections by maintaining DNA, tissues and other specimens in conditions appropriate for molecular biological applications. The facility is organised into areas focussing on cryopreservation in liquid nitrogen, -80°C and -20°C freezers, refrigeration at 4°C and ambient/dry storage. Additionally, the facility has a sample preparation room equipped for high-throughput work with robotic automation.

The MCF is one of the key specimen repositories for the CryoArks project. Working with the facility manager and other members of the team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the project to build, catalogue and maintain the CryoArks collection at NHM. Bringing together a legacy of disparate specimens and making new collections as part of a network of partners across the UK promises to be interesting work, presenting many opportunities for applying existing skills and developing new expertise.
