Head of Collections: Entomology Department

Salary: from £38,812, subject to experience and expertise

Full time

Closing date: Thursday 7 October 2010

With the retirement of the current incumbent, Howard Mendel, we wish to appoint a Head of Collections for the insect (and arachnid) collections at the Natural History Museum, London. The Head of Collections will be a member of the departmental management team and the cross-science Collections Committee. The Entomology Department houses about 30 million specimens, cared for by a team of 25 curators, and representing the most extensive coverage of insect material in the world in terms of taxon, geographical, and temporal diversity. The successful candidate will demonstrate experience of managing a large collection and a substantial number of staff or a clear capacity to do so. We seek an effective manager and also a leader with the capacity to work constructively and dynamically with researchers within and outside the Museum. A further important purpose of this position will be to develop an ever greater level of access to the collections, both by supporting scientific visitors and, particularly, to develop a collections digitisation programme. While a PhD is not essential for this post, such a qualification is highly desirable given the need for a better understanding of researcher requirements. The successful candidate will demonstrate a deep understanding of the value of natural history collections to a range of stakeholders.

* minimally, a BSc in a biological sciences subject, but a PhD is preferred

* ideally a Museum Studies qualification, but not essential

* application of Health and Safety procedures, protocols to the curation and the protection of collections within Health and Safety legislation

* experience of managing a budget

* a record of publication on collections management and research on collections

* experience of the needs and practice of taxonomic research

* the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing in English at all levels

* a record of growing the collections user base to achieve the Museum's mission

* the capacity to solve problems with the ability to approach tasks logically and with due care and attention to detail
